San Francisco's Lombard Street
San Francisco's Lombard Street is best known for the one-way section in which the roadway has eight sharp turns that have earned the street the distinction of being "the crookedest street in the world."
There used to be many roads like this in San Francisco. They were built like this primarily in the 1800's. And it's pretty obvious why if you think about it. How well do you think a horse drawn carriage would do either going straight up or straight down a street that was this steep? It wouldn't do well at all. The curves allowed a much easier and controlled ascent or descent. This stretch of Lombard Street is one of a few like this still left in San Francisco.
